It’s probably fair to say that Introducing driverless cars to UK roads was Innovate UK’s most high profile funding competition in 2014 – that went on to allocate £19 million to three consortia to test driverless cars on UK roads for the first time.
In the pre-election period this competition was championed at high levels of government; with the then Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) Vince Cable personally presenting the winning projects live on radio news and in television news features.

A year on, and the same department is investing even more funds to maintain its push to position the UK as a leader in autonomous vehicle know-how, this time committing up to £20 million through Innovate UK’s newly launched Connected and Autonomous Vehicles competition.

KTN hosted a second webinar to assist potential applicants on 16 October, during which Iarla Kilbane-Dawe, DfT’s Head of Research Delivery, reemphasised that proposals needn't be limited to the suggested six challenges, and should be designed to help support local decision making on air quality issues.

For its Transport Technologies Innovations Grant (T-TRIG) scheme, the Department for Transport has so far funded 25 projects: including eleven early-stage transport innovation grants resulting from the 2014 pilot competition and a further fourteen arising from the June 2015 round of this rolling grant funding call.

A new report from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) calls for greater industry collaboration and transparency in developing connected and driverless cars. This will help ensure that future autonomous vehicles are safe from cyber threats.

Cars are already more ‘intelligent’: driver assistance systems, alerts and notifications, cameras and in-vehicle decision support systems are already commonplace. Over the coming years, connected technologies between both vehicles themselves and the transport infrastructure will become an integral feature of the global car market, worth €39bn to the market by 2018. The increasing use of connectivity in and between cars has put pressure on manufacturers and consumers to ensure connected systems remain safe.
